Weapons Used in Basic Combat Training

Weapons Used in Basic Combat TrainingWeapons Used in Basic Combat TrainingIt wouldnt be the military if it didnt involve firing weapons. Members will get their first crack at firing actual military weapons during the last few weeks of basic combat training. Weapons training differs greatly among the different branches basic training programs. Without a doubt, Marine Corp recruits fire the most rounds during the basic training programs. Theyre followed by the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, and finally the Coast Guard. Regardless of the branch, a recruit cant graduate from military basic combat training/boot camp without proving that they can handle a military weapon without shooting themselves, their classmates, or the instructors. There are many types of weapons used in the United States Military, but in military basic combat training, a recruit is only required to learn about a few. If the military job requires one to know about additional weapons, and how to use them, mora training will be given additionally during military job school. M-16A2 Assault Rifle The M-16A2 rifle is the voreingestellt military rifle used for combat. Its carried by pretty much every military member in a combat zone. Most people simply call it the M-16. The M-16 has been around in one form or another since the Vietnam war (the first version, the M16A1, entered Army service in 1964). Its longevity is creditable to its usefulness as a general assault weapon. Its considered by many to be one of the finest military rifles ever made, although advocates of the M-4 Carbine may argue with that assessment. The rifle is lightweight, simple to operate, and puts out a lot of lead. The M16A2 5.56mm rifle is a lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine fed, shoulder or hip-fired weapon designed for either automatic fire (3-round bursts) or semiautomatic fire (single shot) through the use of a selector lever. The weapon has a fully adjustable rear sight. The bottom of the trigger guard ope ns to provide access to the trigger while wearing winter mittens or chemical protective gear. The upper receiver/barrel assembly has a fully adjustable rear sight and a compensator which helps keep the muzzle down during firing. The steel bolt group and barrel extension are designed with locking lugs which lock the bolt group to the barrel extension, allowing the rifle to have a lightweight aluminum receiver. In basic combat training, recruits of the Army, Air Force, and Marine Corp will fire this weapon. In Navy Recruit Training, youll fire a computerized simulator of the M-16 rifle. This simulator is almost like firing the real thing (the computerized rifle even kicks and makes a loud noise). The Coast Guard is the only branch that does not fire the M-16 rifle during basic training. Recruits who receive classroom training, though, are given instruction on how to fire the weapon, as well as practical training for disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly. If a member of the Coast Guar d gets a job that requires him or her to carry an M-16, that member will go through additional training, including actually firing the weapon. M-4 Carbine The M-4 combat assault rifle first entered Army service in 1997. The rifle is the standard weapon used by some Army units such as the 82nd Airborne teilen and special operations units, such as Army Rangers. With a shortened barrel and collapsible stock, the M-4 is ideal for close quarter marksmanship where lightweight and quick action is required. Firing a standard 5.56 millimeter round (the same as the M-16), the weapon weighs a mere 5.6 lbs. when empty. A revised rear sight allows for better control of the weapon out to the maximum range of the ammunition used. With the PAQ-4 (Infrared Sight) mounted on the forward rail system, the M-4 can be fitted for increased firepower. The M-4 Carbine can also be fitted with the M-203 40mm grenade launcher. The M-203 is a lightweight, compact, breech loading, pump action, single shot la uncher. The launcher consists of a hand guard and sight assembly with an adjustable metallic folding, short-range blade sight assembly, and an aluminum receiver assembly which houses the barrel latch, barrel stop, and firing mechanism. The launcher is capable of firing a variety of low velocity 40mm ammunition. The launcher also has a quadrant sight that may be attached to the M-4 carrying handle and is used when precision is required out to the maximum effective range of the weapon. Some Army recruits (usually those in infantry training) will get a chance to carry and qualify with the M-4, instead of the M-16. Many infantry Marines will be trained on the M-4 during Marine Corp infantry training, following basic training. M-9 Pistol Did you know that, in combat, its mostly officers who carry handguns? Most enlisted dont. Notable exceptions are military policeand special operations forces. The M-9 pistolis the primary sidearm for all of the military services, except the Coast Gu ard. It entered the services in 1985 (1990 for the Army). The adoption of the M-9 pistol was the result of a congressional mandate to equip all U.S. services with a standard handgun. The M-9 meets the strict requirements for functional reliability, the speed of the first shot, rapidity of fire, the speed of reloading, range, penetration, and accuracy to 50 yards. The pistols components are interchangeable, allowing this weapon to be pieced together from the parts of others. Those attending Army basic combat training will fire the M-9 before graduation. The Air Force previously had those attending fire the M-9 pistol during basic training theyve since removed this requirement, as few Air Force enlisted members are required to carry a pistol in combat. The other branches do not fire this weapon during initial training. Sig Sauer P229 DAK Pistol While the other branches use the M-9 as their standard issue pistol, the Coast Guard belongs to the Department of Homeland Security, not t he Department of Defense, and therefore uses the standard weapons used by the Department of Homeland Security. The P229 DAK .40 SW pistol is the standard sidearm for the Department of Homeland Security and Coast Guard and is a compact, double-action pistol. The pistol weighs only 6.5 pounds and fires double action only, meaning it is a safe and reliable weapon. A key feature of this pistol is quick and easy disassembly for cleaning. All one has to do is lock the slide back and remove the magazine. The DAK model also includes a double strike ability.

Dont Fall for the Training Movie Montage - The Muse

Dont Fall for the Training Movie Montage - The MuseDont Fall for the Training Movie MontageWhen Ren first insists on teaching Willard to dance in Footloose, the guy cant hear a beat to save his life. But three minutes later, hes a pro, showing off his moves while his mentor perches on a tractor and looks on proudly. To state the obvious, movies are fiction- even those that are based on or inspired by true stories tend to fictionalize for dramatic effect. And you should know that theyre not generally the best models for how things actually work offscreen. Just as the majority of romantic comedies dont get relationships quite right, most films dont get careers or accomplishments right. The list of ways thats true could fill a much longer article than this one, but lets focus here on the installation. (I was inspired to write about this after reading posts by Austin Kleon and David Wong.)Yep, the montage. You know the one Im talking about. The part of the movie where the underdog protag onist decides to give it their all- it being preparing for whatever competition or moment will later serve as the climax of the movie. The screen then flashes through snippets of practice scenes, starting with a struggle but quickly fast forwarding through stages of improvement toward excellence, while an uplifting soundtrack ties it all together. Heres the problem That montage is terribly misleading. It creates the illusion that mastery can be achieved faster, that success comes more easily, and that the whole process happens more smoothly than is actually the case. The montage is a convenient tool that helps move a plot along, but in many cases even the full period of time its condensing wouldnt be enough to pull off what countless movies suggest is possible. A month or two of rigorous training most likely isnt going to be enough to make you great. You cant catch up to, let alone triumph over, those whove been dedicated for far longer, no matter how much or how genuinely you want something. Regardless, the montage skims over and glamorizes the hardest, messiest work, packaging it into an arc with a clear upward trajectory toward winning or proving yourself. In the context of the full movie, getting good is a blip, and it flies by. In real life, you cant predict how long the struggle will last, and youre sure to fail frequently before you succeed. Lets look at one such sequence thats accompanied by one of my all-time favorite Disney songs. At the start of Ill Make a Man Out of You, Mulan and her fellow soldiers are, well, pathetic. The first two and a half minutes depict all sorts of flubs and fails- from trips and falls to missed bow-and-arrow shots to accidental explosions. But one early morning, Mulan, her brow furrowed in fierce determination, manages to climb up a tall pole with weights strapped to her wrists. From that moment on, the motley crew suddenly resembles a formidable army and Mulan, instead of trailing behind the men, is a star. Sure, the view er might learn that one small win can beget another and start a streak. But the drastic turning point does little to reveal what finally clicked for Mulan, let alone for her peers. We dont see her wrestling with different approaches or persevering through a rough bugfix of mixed results. Its all bad until its all good. The montage obscures the incremental lessons and improvements and the ups and downs of a real path to success.Even if you know, logically, that you shouldnt set your expectations based on how it happens in the movies, its hard to shake the internalized notion that things shouldnt be this hard for this long. But they are. I dont say that to discourage you. On the contrary, its meant to help you craft a more realistic plan that doesnt include an inevitable letdown. In other words, if you expect to will yourself to a meteoric rise, youre just setting yourself up for disappointment. So dont. Instead of counting on one turn of events to boost you straight to the top, focus your plan on sustained, and sustainable, work thatll add up in the long term. Be patient- because your dreams wont come true in a magical three-minute montage, but change will come with time and effort. And if a soundtrack helps in getting you there, by all means, crank it up. (BRB, going to create a montage playlist I can listen to on repeat.)

Follow Your Dreams#8230; Even if the Journey Makes you Uncomfortable

Follow Your Dreams8230 Even if the Journey Makes you Uncomfortable Follow Your Dreams8230 Even if the Journey Makes you Uncomfortable So, he stayed in his hometown and worked for the next year to save money. During the summer of 2013 he landed an internship with a PR Agency. The agency was headquartered in New York, but his position would require him to move to San Francisco. So, for an internship position, he packed his bags and caught a plane from Ohio to the Bay Area. For the first three months, he stayed with a family friend and during the next three months he lived in a hostel. My friend was hired as a fulltime junior account executive in December 2013, and just last month he finally moved into his own house with roommates.Although David didnt really know anyone, he picked up and moved nearly 2,500 miles from his comfort zone to pursue his dreams. He wasnt afraid to be uncomfortable. Then we have Tierra, also a 2012 graduate with hopes of moving to Washington D.C. and attending g raduate school. And although she was accepted for the fall 2012 semester, she could not afford to move from Phoenix to our nations capital. But, Tierra didnt give up on herbei dreams. She deferred her enrollment for one year and moved in with a friend in L.A. There, Tierra worked four jobs- including roles as a barista and retail associate- to save money for her pending move. This young lady had a bachelors degree, yet she worked multiple odd jobs just to get by.Finally, in May of 2013, Tierra was able to relocate to DC, find a few roommates and begin graduate school.Like David, Tierra wasnt afraid of being uncomfortable.Rewind back to 2011 when another friend of mine, Demetrius, graduated from college. He took a step out on faith by moving from the southwest to the east coast (New York) for an internship. Demetrius worked there for one year, even having to take on freelance jobs to make ends meet. He was finally hired on full time and then promoted after another year.In just two yea rs, he was able to double his salary, be promoted multiple times and even purchase his own apartment.David, Tierra and Demetrius werent afraid to be uncomfortable.A CareerBuilder study last year found that 44 percent of workers said they would relocate for the right job. Yet, 41 percent of people who relocated experienced loneliness and doubt and 16 percent felt homesick. But the study also found that a whopping 77 percent of workers who relocated over the last year reported that they were happy with the move and didnt regret their decision.Workers said they experienced the most benefits of relocating in the following areasMaking a fresh start (30%)Making new friends (31%)Having new experiences they wouldnt have had anywhere else (29%)Earning at a higher level gave their family more spending options (27%)Better long-term career opportunities (22%)Area was nicer and schools were better (19%)I think its always inspirational and encouraging to hear success stories because it shows us th at things are possible.Of course, the choice to relocate to follow your dreams isnt always so black and white when you have a family or other responsibilities. But, if youre young, a recent graduate, single with no kids, or just dont have many real obligations to your current residence, I askwhy not?If you are a recent graduate or unmarried with a family, now is certainly the time to travel and experience new places. Dont settle for where you are if its not helping with the pursuit of your goals.Life is about taking risks, and on the path to achieving your dreams you are bound to be met with adversity. That doesnt mean you should allow the fear of the unknown or the uncomfortable feeling of stepping outside your comfort zone to stop you from pursuing your goals. As the saying goes, If at first you dont succeed, try, try again. Even if you take a risk and it doesnt work out, you can always try, try again.Besides, the most successful people today reached this status because they werent afraid to try new things, step out on faith, strive to reach their goals, and most important, be uncomfortable.

As famous for being a hard-nosed (and occasionally unscrupulous) businessman as he welches for being an inventor, Edison held over 1,000 patents in his lifetime. Not bad for a guy who was once described by a childhood teacher as too stupid to learn anything. Thereafter educated at home, Edison started his first entrepreneurial venture at 12, selling newspapers on the Grand Trunk Railroad. Later, he founded his newspaper and sold it to passengers until his impromptu lab in a baggage car caught fire, resulting his losing access to trains. Experts reveal the biggest things to avoid when moving

Experts reveal the biggest things to avoid when movingExperts reveal the biggest things to avoid when movingMoving is an inevitable part of life thats more stressful for some people than divorce, according to studies. But there are ways to make it just a little easier. We interviewed moving experts to learn how these tiny moves (pun intended) can make your move better.Pack an essential bagThis is key for moving day. All your stuff will be in boxes, and when you get to your new home, you might be ready to crash. So in your essential bag, you should stash toiletries, medicine, toothpaste, towels and a change of clothing for the following day, says Kate Windleton, relocations manager at London-based Strong Move.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreDont overstuff your boxesYou may think this will make the move easier since youll have fewer boxes, but it actually has the opposite result, Windleton says. The problem is that the boxes become too heavy to lift and carry, which can cause injuries to the movers and the other potential problem is that the boxes might break, and your items would break, she says.Plan aheadInform utility companies about your move ahead of time (at least 1 month ahead of time), schauplatz up new utility bills, changing your address so theres no gap in between homes.Seal the bottom of the boxThis moving mistake is very easy to make if youre not paying attention, says Marty Basher, home organization expert for ModularClosets. If you dont seal the bottom of the box as well as the top, then your items can frage out. Doing a crossover flap fold is not enough to seal the bottom of a box once it is filled. Be sure to use a heavy duty tape completely over the seams, and overlap about three inches up the sides as well, Basher says. This will give you a sturdy bottom you can be sure will not fall open and spill your things out.Full drawersIt may seem like a time saver not to empty out dresser or storage drawers while you pack, but this can be a big moving mistake, Basher says. Full drawers are very heavy, and even if you tape or tie them down, things will still shift and possibly break. Even a dresser having that extra weight in it can be a hazard. It could tip over in the moving truck and damage other things, Basher says. Take the extra time to pack up the contents of any drawers, and save yourself a big headache.Pack delicate items carefullyDont skimp on the bubble wrap, plastic wrap, and packing paper, Basher says. Fragile items should be wrapped thickly enough that they squish a bit when you squeeze them. This will ensure that your delicate items stay in one piece.Dont leave empty space in your boxesYou dont want anything to shift in transit, so fill those empty spaces with packing material, says Nimrod Sheinberg, VP of sales for Oz Moving Storage.Research parking permitsIf youre moving to an urban area, there could be rest rictions on where and for how long you can park your moving truck or container. For example, in St. Louis, a moving container may stay up to a week in an alley. But in Chicago, containers arent permitted on the streets or in the alleys, so they cant be delivered to some Chicago zip codes, says Mike Glanz, co-founder and CEO of HireAHelper.Dont lose your nuts and boltsWhen disassembling furniture or other household equipment, be sure to keep close track of the nuts, bolts, washers, and flanges by dedicating a plastic zip-lock bag to each disassembled item. Then, duct tape the bag and its contents to the item or a piece of the item so its easy and quick to find when it comes time for reassembly, Glanz says.Use professional moving boxesUsing rickety and cheap boxes from the supermarket is a mistake, says Bryan Stoddard, director of Homewares Insider. The bottoms of these boxes literally break, as these boxes are only intended to carry fruits and vegetables. Youre likely to try to tak e advantage of its full volume while exceeding the weight that it can handle.Color-coded tape is keyKeep an inventory of what goes where, and use color-coded tape to know which box goes into what room, says Elizabeth Bernabeo, content and marketing manager at Holloway Removals and Storage. That way, once the boxes arrive at the new address, its easy to store them in their respective room and unload them there, she says.

Review of CD Baby an Online Music Distributor

Review of CD Baby an Online Music DistributorReview of CD Baby an Online Music DistributorIf youre an independent band or musician, you know how hard and expensive it can be to get expokoranvers for your music.CD Babyis a good choice for bands and labels who want to get their music out there, in front of customers. A Well-Known Online Music Store It is one of the best known online record stores, so music fans go there in droves to look for new albums. Also, the staff is stacked with music lovers who listen to every album they sell so that they can advise their customers. If you are willing to take on the task of promoting your releases completely, then this distributor can be a great choice. CD Baby says it has mora than 300,000 recording artists across a wide variety of genres. It can sell songs and distribute royalties all the things a record label would traditionally do. The company calls itself the anti-label for musiciansand has a library of more than 400,000albums and more than 3 million tracks. According to the company website, when a musician signs up with CD Baby their music is available for download at iTunes within a couple of days. The Pros of Using a Platform Like CD Baby CD Baby can do for an unsigned musicianwhat a record label does for its clients. It can be an easy route to distribution for unsigned artists who are just getting started, or who dont want the bureaucracy of a record label. Especially for an upstart label without a proven track record or a band working on their release, finding a distribution deal can be next to impossible. Generally, distributors want to see some kind of assurance that theyll be able to shift your music once they take it on board, and when youre getting started, that kind of proof is hard to give. CD Baby gives distribution to anyone who wants it, which means making your music available is easy. Availability is only part of the battle, however. Strong selling points for CD Baby Musiciansget a larger perce ntage of the profits than through typical distribution deals. The staff listens to everything so that they can make recommendations to users, and albums can be bought in physical or digital form. There are many chances for potential fans to stumble across your music, including sounds like categories that allow users to look for bands that sound like their favorites or a tool that allows people to shop for music by mood. Promotion Helps Create Exposure Promotion is the key to getting people to buy your music in any large numbers, and when you sell via CD Baby, youll have to be especially proactive in promoting your releases and making sure people know where to find them. This is probably the biggest drawback to going with CD Baby versus a traditional record label You wont get the in-house promotion machine that labels give their clients. And with such a vast catalog on CD Baby, its a big pond, and it can be hard to get noticed. All that said, CD Baby, lets you keep a much larger p ortion of your profits than traditional distributors. Best of all, the deals are non-exclusive.

It’s wasteful to work for 8 hours when you could get the same task done in 3.Forget the hype and what you see on social media, the #hustle movement isn’t going to get you where you want to be.Cultivate selective laziness and do only what you need to do.This will force you to focus on important tasks, prioritize your time and energy, and actually make moves that will advance your life.4. Read fewer booksI’ve read hundreds of books… Hundreds. And I remember  maybe 50 of them.If you want to make the most of your self education, you must read.… But you shouldn’t try to read a book a day or even a book a week as some gurus recommend.Instead, pick 6â€"12 amazing books that are hyper focused on challenges you are facing in your life right now and go all out on what those books tell you to do.Take massive action on what you learn and only move onto the next book once you’ve reaped the rewards of the information you’ve already learned.Knowledge without action is impotent.5. Play more video games (the right kind)Seriously…Video games help you unwind, relax, and think about problems in a d ifferent way.Buy a great strategy game or something that encourages tactical thinking and play it periodically throughout the day.It will help you approach your life in creative ways and give you a great way to stimulate your brain while unwinding.6. Exercise moreOk…This isn’t exactly unconventional, but it’s still important.Exercise is one of the single most important habits that you can cultivate and build into your life. The more you move, the happier and more successful you will be.Spend at least 90 minutes a day doing something active and train with intensity in the gym at least 3 times a week.Every area of your life will improve when you do.7. Spend less time in the office and more time with friendsIn a study conducted by Harvard over 80 years, they found that relationships, not financial success was the greatest indicator of happiness and general quality of life.No one sits on their death bed regretting not spending more time in the office.Almost everyone wishes that the y’d spent more time with family and loved ones.Quit working so darn hard and instead prioritize important relationships in your life.8. Don’t trust yourselfYou lie to yourself more than anyone else that you know. All too often people tell you to trust your intuition and follow your gut.But in reality, you and your gut are both liars.Instead, trust the facts. Listen to the data. And think about things logically.Make decisions based on sound reason and evidence, not the little voice in your head.9. Quit trying so hardLife isn’t that serious. We’re all going to die anyways and everything that you’ve accomplished will one day be wiped clean from the history books. So stop acting like you’re important and stressing yourself out because you feel a burden to impact the world.Have more fun, smile more, laugh more, and enjoy your life.Because at the end of the day, this is all you’ve got.10. Ignore (almost) everyonePeople are full of crap.Just about everyone I know is completely w rong about somethingThis post was originally published on Quora.com.

Are you suffering in a hostile work environment What you need to know

Are you suffering in a hostile work environment What you need to know Are you suffering in a hostile work environment What you need to know While most people trust that they’ll know a hostile work environment when they feel it, identifying one is actually much more complex than you’d think. Here are nine facts to help you understand what a hostile work environment is and what to do if you find yourself in one.Hostile work environment is a legal termThe U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) defines harassment as “unwelcome conduct that is based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Harassment in the workplace becomes illegal if the offensive conduct is a condition of continued employment or if the behavior becomes pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile or abusive work environment.   Isolated incidents, unless extremely serious, are not considered illegal. The leg al definition of harassment also states that the conduct must create an environment that would be intimidating, hostile or offensive to the reasonable person.Only protected classes can file a Charge of Discrimination under Title VIIThe legal definition of harassment outlines the classes that are protected against a hostile work environment, which include race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability and genetic information.Harassment regarding things such as weight or appearance don’t belong to any of the protected classes, but may fall under one of the   EEOC definitions in certain cases. The law also protects employees against retaliationWhile retaliation is not considered a protected class, Title IX contains anti-discrimination laws that prohibit harassment against employees for filing a charge.  The law not only protects the employee who files the complaint, but also the employee who speaks out about discrimination during an investigation.Additionally, an employe e is protected against retaliation for opposing employment practices that they believe discriminate against individuals. The difference between a hostile work environment and a toxic work environment“Everybody has experienced some sort of toxicity in the work environment over the course of their career,” said Josh Taylor, an attorney and lead content strategist at Smokeball, a legal management software company. Toxicity in the workplace includes unlikable or rude coworkers. While toxic workplaces aren’t ideal, they’re also not illegal. “It becomes illegal if you are being targeted for your protected class under the law,” Taylor said. Annoyances, slights and one-off events are not considered illegal. What you should do if you think you’re in a hostile work environmentIf you feel that a certain harassing behavior will become repetitive, Taylor recommends talking to an attorney. While he warns not to pay an expensive retainer early in the process, it’s a good idea to keep a legal expert in the loop.Employees should also note that there is a statute of limitations on these types of incidents. In most situations, employees have 180 days to file from the act of discrimination, however, there are exceptions to that rule.Julia Kanouse, CEO of the Illinois Technology Association, recommends always reporting the situation to your company’s human resource department before taking it to the EEOC.Why you should report a hostile work environment work to HR firstWhile a one-off incident can be indicative of the start of a hostile work environment, your case won’t hold much water if you attempt to bring it to the EEOC. Instead, for a few different reasons, you should report the incident to HR before taking legal action. The first reason one should always bring a situation to HR initially is because  the issue could actually be squashed right then and there.  â€œAny human resources person worth their salt should be trying to build an environment of openness,” Taylor said. An effective HR department has procedures in place to handle this type of complaint.  The second reason why an issue should be brought to HR first is because this provides a solid record of how long the issue has been occurring. In these types of legal cases, it’s critical that there is well-documented evidence of how long the problem has persisted.“There’s only one way to prove that something is pervasive and consistent…and that’s to have a record of it,” Taylor said.  What you should do if HR won’t listen to your hostile work environment complaintIf HR doesn’t take action after you submitted a complaint, and you believe your situation classifies as harassment, you should file a report with the EEOC. An individual can submit a charge online through the EEOC Public Portal, in person at an EEOC office, by mail, or over the phone by calling 1-800-669-4000.How leaders can know if their company has a hostile work environment“Having clear policies and proc edures around what to do is really important so that everyone in the organization understands how to take that first step,”  Kanouse said. It’s also important that employers consistently monitor how their employees are feeling in their workplace. One way to “take the company temperature” is to send out employee engagement surveys. In order to receive completely honest answers, employers must ensure that the surveys remain anonymous.A new method that many large companies have started using is social media monitoring. While tracking customers opinions on social media has been in practice for years, many larger companies have also began scanning Twitter feeds for employee opinions. Employers use tools such as G2, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Mention and Brandwatch to monitor what employees are saying about the company on social media, which is one creative way for employers to ensure that employees feel safe and secure in the workplace. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

10 Things Exceptionally Successful Do on the Weekends

10 Things Exceptionally Successful Do on the Weekends 10 Things Exceptionally Successful Do on the Weekends Article by Casey Imafidon It is one thing to be successful, but it is another thing to be exceptionally successful. To attain such a high level of success, you have to be willing to put in the work. The theme of the modern-day careerist is this: How do you get more done in less time? While a lot of people see the weekend as a time to hang out and relax, exceptionally successful people have a different idea of how Saturdays and Sundays should be spent. Here is how they spend their weekends to set the tone for a week of crazy productivity: 1. They Wake Up Early Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to wake up at 3:45 every morning â€" including on weekends. It is wrong to assume that you need to stay in bed until midday because its the weekend. Successful people know time is precious and shouldnt be wasted, no matter what day it is. 2. They Read You cannot negate the power of reading. Eimantas Balciunas, CEO of Travel Ticker, says, Reading and staying abreast of what happens in the travel industry puts me in a position to discover those things the competition apparently may have ignored! By reading and expanding your knowledge, even and especially on weekends, you are better informed to approach your tasks for the week. 3. They  Spend Time Reflecting As Socrates said, An unexamined life is not worth living. Successful people follow that philosophy by using the weekends to look back at what worked and what didnt over the course of the previous week. By reflecting on your week, you can focus on the improvements you need to make on Monday. 4. They Make Time to Pursue Their Interests Successful people know that chasing success doesnt mean they have to forget their favorite hobbies. The weekend offers you the opportunity to be creative and do whatever it is you like to do most in your spare time. 5. They Give Something Back Alexey Chuklin, founder and CEO of Write!, says, I can use the weekend to give back by showing I am a part of a community. Similarly, in the book Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals, author Thomas C. Corley writes  that 70 percent of successful people give back at least five hours every month. 6. They Disconnect Successful people know they have to carve out downtime during which they put away their phones and dont check their email. The weekend is the most ideal time to seek out a break, even if its a small one. 7. They Connect With Their Families Weekdays might not offer busy successful people enough time to spend with their families and friends.  The weekend can be the perfect time to catch up. 8. They Stay in Shape Exercise can be refreshing. Not only does it strengthen your mind, but it also gives you the opportunity to clear your head and embrace fresh ideas for the new week. 9. They Build Momentum Successful people dont settle for average. They are always focused on excellence by keeping up the momentum. The weekend is a good time to put things in perspective, gain clarity, and  refocus on your most important goals. 10. They Plan for the Upcoming Week Twitters Jack Dorsey has an insane work ethic â€" he works 16 hours a day Monday through Friday. However, he  makes sure his schedule allows him to take off Saturdays, and he uses his Sundays to plan for the upcoming week. So â€" how do you spend your weekends? 9 Signs Youre Going to Be Successful in Whatever You Do

9 Signs Youre Going to Be Successful in Whatever You Do 9 Signs Youre Going to Be Successful in Whatever You Do We all define success differently. We all should define it differently (and here’s why). Yet, at the same time, highly successful people share a number of common traits and attitudes. They’re willing to face vulnerability, emotional ups and downs, and the risk of public and private failure. They want to succeed on their terms- and they aren’t willing to accept a cap on their success. Here are nine ways to know if you have what it takes to be successful: 1. You Enjoy Succeeding Through Others Talent is obviously important, but the ability to work together, check egos at the door, and make individual sacrifices when necessary is the only way any team succeeds. That spirit can exist only when it comes from the top. And that’s why successful people focus on the individual rather than the position, the team rather than the hierarchy, and most importantly, gaining happiness and success from the happiness and achievements of others. 2. You Don’t Make Choices- You Create Choices Most people simply choose from column A or column B. People on the path to success often skim through A and B and then create their own column C. As Jon Burgstone says, “Every time you want to make any important decision, there are two possible courses of action. You can look at the array of choices that present themselves, pick the best available option, and try to make it fit. Or, you can do what the true entrepreneur does: Figure out the best conceivable option and then make it available.” And that’s why entrepreneurs often accomplish the inconceivable- because to successful people, that word truly doesn’t mean what everyone else thinks it means. 3. The Voice in Your Head Is Louder Than Every Other Voice You Hear Others may doubt. Others may criticize. Others may judge and disparage and disapprove. You don’t care. You see all those opinions for what they are: not right, not wrong, just data. So you sift through that data for the actual nuggets you can use. The rest you ignore. Why? You may respect the opinions of others, but you believe in your ideas, your abilities, your will and perseverance and dedication. You believe in yourself. And that makes you want to live your life your way, and not anyone else’s way. 4. You Believe That How You Play the Game Really Is More Important Than Whether You Win or Lose If you’re on the path to success, you’d rather fail on your own terms than succeed on someone else’s. You’d rather reach for your own future than have your future lie in someone else’s hands. You feel it’s better to burn out than to fade away. Sure, you want to win. You’re driven to win. But, you want to change the rules, create your own playing field, and win the game you want to play- because winning a game when you’re forced to play would still feel like losing. 5. You Don’t Need to Be Disciplined, Because You Can’t Wait to Do All the Things That Bring You Closer to Achieving Your Goals Discipline often boils down to finding a way to do the things you need to do. Successful people can’t wait to do the things they need to do. They have goals and dreams, and they know every task they complete takes them one step closer to achieving those things. That’s why people on the path to success can have fun performing even the most mundane tasks. When there’s a clear line of sight between what you do and where you want to go, work is no longer just work. Work is exciting. Work is fulfilling. Work, when it’s meaningful and fulfilling, is living. And that’s why... 6. You Don’t Want to Simply Gain a Skill and Then Live a Routine Some people work to gain a skill or achieve a position so they can relax, comfortable in their abilities and knowledge. They’ve worked hard and they’re content. (That’s not a bad thing; everyone’s perception of accomplishment should be different.) People on the path to success hate the contentment an acquired skill brings. They hate the comfort an achievement affords. They see acquired skills as a foundation for acquiring more skills. They see achievements as platforms for further achievement. In short, they pay their dues, and they want to pay more dues. They look at themselves in the mirror and think, “OK, but what have you done for me lately?” And then they go out and do more. 7. You’re a Fan of Other Successful People Working for a large company is often a zero-sum game, because personal success usually comes at the expense of others. If you get promoted, someone else doesn’t. If you get an opportunity, someone else doesn’t. That’s why it’s really hard not to begrudge the success of others- it’s hard to be genuinely happy for a co-worker when you’re disappointed. On the other hand, successful people love when others thrive. They know the pie is big enough for everyone. (Forget the current pie; they’re out there trying to make new pies.) Successful people see the accomplishments of others as exciting and inspirational, and as validation that creativity and hard work do pay off. 8. You’re Willing to Start a Movement of One We all like to belong, to feel we’re kindred spirits, and that’s why some ideas quickly gain a following and why great ones can become movements. Joining a crowd is awesome. But every movement starts with one person who dares to stand up, alone, unprotected, and vulnerable, and be different- to say what others aren’t saying, to do what others aren’t doing, to take a chance and accept the consequences. What makes people on the path to success so willing to take that risk? 9. You Think, “Why Not Me?” Regardless of the pursuit, success is difficult to achieve. That’s why we all fail sometimes. And when we do, it’s easy to decide events were outside our control. It’s easy to feel depressed and wonder, “Why don’t I ever get the opportunities other people get?” or “Why aren’t my friends more supportive?” or “Why can’t I catch a break?” In short, it’s easy to think, “Why me?” Truly successful people ask a different question: “Why not me?” That’s why an entrepreneur will open a restaurant in the same location where other restaurants have failed: “They didn’t succeed, but why not me?” That’s why entrepreneurs will start a software company with nothing but an idea: “They may have deeper pockets and a major market share, but why not me?” People on the path to wealth don’t assume others possess special talents or a gift from the gods. They see successful people and think, “That’s awesome, and if she can do that, why not me?” Good question: Why not you? If you think about it, there is no real answer, because when you’re truly willing not just to dream big but also to try incredibly hard, there are no reasons why you can’t achieve it- at least no reasons that matter to you. Next Generation of Engineers Meredith Campbell

Next Generation of Engineers Meredith Campbell Next Generation of Engineers Meredith Campbell Next Generation of Engineers: Meredith Campbell Its never too late to change your career path and get serious about engineering. At age 22, Meredith (Merry) Campbell realized she wanted to make a difference and do something important with her life and that meant becoming a mechanical engineer. For her, watching a video of a discussion on the International Space Station featuring NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott was a key moment. Nicole Stott is the reason I decided to study mechanical engineering, said Campbell, who is also working on a minor in Business Management at Daniel Webster College. Merry founded the Kenya Connection Club, a program that creates instructional videos to help professors at African International University connect with students using a learning management system. In recognition of all her hard work, 2014 has been an award winning year for Merry. She was named ASMEs 2014 New Face of Engineering [College Edition] and was awarded the 2014 Charles T. Main Gold Medal. We got a chance to catch up with Merry in a recent interview: Q: Did you have any interests or previous exposure to mechanical engineering before seeing the video chat with NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott? I actually did not have any exposure to mechanical engineering before watching the video. My father is a software engineer, but even in my early twenties I didnt know what the word engineer meant. My lack of early exposure to engineering is actually the main reasons I think STEM education is so important. It is clear to me now that I was made to be an engineer. Nothing has ever felt so natural. Sometimes I think that if I had been exposed to engineering at an earlier age, I may have worked harder earlier. I struggled for many years trying to figure out what to do with my life, and perhaps that struggle could have been avoided or shortened if I had been able to experience engineering at an earlier age. In the end Im happy with the path that led me to engineering, because it made me who I am today, but I think its important to show young people that engineering is an option. I went to college for three years before I switched my major to mechanical engineering, which may have been a detour I needed in my life, but it was an expensive detour. Q: What motivates you to stay interested in mechanical engineering, particularly aerospace engineering? There are many things that motivate me. I have a sincere desire to make things better for the people around me, and it is clear to me that engineering provides many opportunities to do just that. With aerospace engineering in particular, its the need to explore and the desire for new knowledge. I believe there is an innate desire to explore in every person, a need to make the unknown known. The world was once believed to be flat, and the Americas were unimaginable. Explorations in space are what we have on that front today, and I want to be a part of it. I want to watch the first human walk on Mars and know not only am I part of it because I am part of the human race, but that I am a part of it because I did the physical testing of the rockets that took them there. Its a natural curiosity which for me has become a passion. Q: Did you experience difficulty in transitioning from your previous area of study to mechanical engineering? Before I switched to mechanical engineering, I was going to school for Theology, but I was forced to take a few years off from school due to financial reasons. I only have one year left in that degree, so I am actually hoping to go back and finish it later. The two years of working between schools gave me the time to grow up and figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. The transition to engineering was actually very difficult for me. Only nine of my ninety-six credits transferred. It had been eight years since I had taken a math class, and I had never had any physics classes. For the first month of classes I felt completely lost and overwhelmed, but I dont think that was because I was a transfer student. I think everyone in the class was completely lost and overwhelmed, because its engineering. About a month into school though I found my stride. I am very glad I go to a small school, because its harder to get lost in the crowd. If I was struggling, the professors noticed a nd actively sought to help me. Q: What does your network look like? Do you have mentors or other connections in your network to provide you with support throughout your collegiate experience? Networking is certainly not my strong suit, but in the past few years it has been interesting to see it growing. There are two major contributors: graduating seniors and ASME. Every year since attending Daniel Webster College I have had the privilege of watching some of my friends graduate, and these friends are offered jobs all over the country. An even greater contributor though is ASME. I have had the privilege of holding a district position as well as working on an international committee for ASME. My positions have allowed me to interact with a lot of new people through email and telephone calls, but most importantly face to face at conferences. Its a pleasure to meet and work with people that care as much about something as you do. As for mentors I would say I have many but the two in particular that have had a large impact on my studies are Dean Nicholas Bertozzi of the Daniel Webster College Engineering Department, and Professor Timothy Kostar, the DWC ASME student section ad visor. During my freshman year, Dean Bertozzi saw potential in me and actually hired me as a research assistant. He has given me the opportunity to present at conferences and has been very supportive of my academic career. There have been times when I struggled very much with school, and Dean Bertozzi went out of his way to help me do better. He really cares about the students in his department, and I feel blessed to have him as a mentor. Professor Timothy Kostar has also had an impact on my life. As an advisor he helped set the structure for our section, which was the catalyst for my ASME career. ASME has become a part of my identity, and if Professor Kostar hadnt been there to help organize the student section, I would be a different person. Also, as a professor he expects the students to work hard and be their best, which is a challenge that causes me to thrive. Q: Why do you think conferences are important to your development as an engineer? Because they are an opportunity to learn how the field is developing. Similar to my interest in aerospace engineering, I want to be in the thick of it all. I want to know whats new and what direction engineering is taking. Research and Development interest me very much, because they are all about creating and advancing. Its very exciting. Even more of a benefit though is the ability to meet your peers face to face. As part of the Student Section Enterprise Committee, I have been attending conference calls for the past year. We met for two days at IMECE, and in that two days we were able to accomplish so much more than we ever could over the phone. Once the business was finished, we were able to spend some time together and become friends. I also think it is essential for engineering students to have the opportunity to meet senior engineers. They can become mentors and also contacts for future job searches. Q: How did you learn of the New Faces program and what was your reaction to winning the New Faces of Engineering College-Edition? I heard about the New Faces competition through Facebook. I had been following DiscoverE on the site for some time, so when they posted a link to the New Faces competition I thought I should apply. I was watching the DiscoverE webinar The Best Engineering Career Advice I Ever Got when they announced the three finalists for every organization. I had actually forgotten that they were going to make that announcement, so when I heard my name I was in shock. I couldnt even believe I was in the top three. When they emailed me and told me that I was the new face of engineering (college edition) for ASME, I couldnt believe it. I was so excited, but I wasnt supposed to tell anyone (that was very difficult). The day of the announcement they posted on my Facebook and told me to check my local newspaper. There was an announcement in my local paper, which was a surprise to me and very exciting! Its such an honor to be recognized as a rising engineer. Q: How do you see yourself impacting the engineering profession today, and in the future? Today I am trying to impact the engineering profession by impacting its future engineers. I am very heavily involved in ASME, because I want engineering to be more exciting for the students. If students are excited about engineering and involved while they are studying, they may work harder while still in school. I want to help inspire students to strive for excellence. With my HPVC team everyone knows that I dont believe in good enough, because you can always muster that last bit of effort to do something right. I hope to reach out to high school students to help create interest at that age as well. As for the future, I want to be involved with research, because I want to further the discipline. Stagnation is my greatest fear. When we cease to advance we will begin to deteriorate. I hope to continue my education after I finish my Bachelors. My true desire is to help people. I want to take my engineering knowledge and somehow make life better for those around me.

What Accountants Can Expect in Office 2016

What Accountants Can Expect in Office 2016 What Accountants Can Expect in Office 2016 The launch of Office 2016, a version of the Microsoft's Office productivity suite, is big news for accounting and finance organizations that rely on Excel. And that includes a lot of businesses. Sixty-three percent of U.S. companies and 75 percent of small companies interviewed for the Benchmarking the Accounting Finance Function from Robert Half and Financial Executives Research Foundation (FERF) said they use Excel for budgeting and long-range planning. A boon to finance professionals, the latest revisions to Excel include a number of tools to help manage data, mine it for relevant information and present it in useful ways. Here are four key improvements to look for in Office 2016. 1. Improved “Pivot Tables” Excel can be a boon for many accounting services that rely on analyzing and visualizing data. For example, the “Pivot Tables” filter, sort and calculate in just a few clicks, turning blocks of figures into meaningful tables. To try out pivot tables, select an array of data and use “Recommended Pivot Tables” from the “Insert” ribbon. You will then be presented with a range of options, including what you’d like to calculate and how you’d like it presented. Excel 2016 includes the added ability to work with dates, meaning that you can drill down into your figures with even more accuracy, looking at specific dates or periods of time. The ability to handle data sources has also been adjusted; if you are compiling data from more than one table, Excel 2016 will automatically detect any relationships and define them for you. 2. New chart types Bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts and more can be used to show trends and comparisons. They provide quick snapshots and are perfect when numbers alone don’t tell the whole story. In Excel 2016, charts have been upgraded with a new focus on business intelligence. Five new types have been introduced, including box and whiskers, waterfall, histograms and paretos, and hierarchical treemaps and sunbursts. To create a chart, highlight the figures to visualize and click “charts” within the “insert” ribbon. Here you will see a range of available chart styles. 3. New formulas In addition to doing basic math, Excel’s formulas can also search, sort and filter data. They are among the most versatile and powerful aspects of Excel but can also be complicated to master. Formulas are typed directly into cells, effectively programming them with a short line of code. For finance professionals, SUMIFS and SUMPRODUCT are useful for filtering numbers before adding them together. IRR, NPV and PV perform complex functions relating to Internal Rate of Return, Net Present Value and Present Value forecasts. Excel 2016 introduces FORECAST to predict future values based on historical data. The formula can also be used to calculate the confidence interval or show the length of a repetitive pattern that Excel has detected. To get the most from Excel, learn more about the complex formulas that make light work of difficult calculations. 4. Power Query as standard Excel 2016 comes packaged with Power Query, a downloadable add-on in previous versions. Power Query inserts data from external sources, either your own or public information from Internet sources such as Wikipedia. [NOTE: You can add Power Query to previous versions of Excel by choosing “File” from the ribbon, then “Options” and “Add-Ins.” Select “Manage,” “COM Add-Ins” and choose “Microsoft Power Query for Excel.” This will add a “Power Query” ribbon. Click this and choose “From Web,” “From File” or “From Database” to import data.] According to the buzz within the finance industry, Microsoft’s latest software update comes loaded with tools to help assess, process and visualize data and trends in new and more complex ways. By mastering the built-in features, you’ll get more insight for your effort and more value from your information. Keep collecting Excel tips for accounting professionals. How HR Staff Has to Think About Issues Every Day

How HR Staff Has to Think About Issues Every Day How HR Staff Has to Think About Issues Every Day The employee question seems simple, straight-forward, and should be easy to answer. Right? Not if your job is in Human Resources. Even the simplest employee question raises countless red flags for an employer’s HR team. Once again, you walk that five-pronged path. How do you satisfy all five stakeholders while treating the current employee fairly? What’s best for the employer? What’s best for the employee? What’s legal or required by a government agency? What sets the  precedent for future decisions about and fair treatment of employees? What decision will get you sued with all of the concurrent costs and aggravation? You can’t make a decision unless the decision satisfies all five stakeholders â€" to some degree. Is it really any wonder that sometimes it’s the employee stakeholder who suffers? Here’s how Human Resources people have to think and make decisions to answer an employee question. Lets use the modification of this company trade show travel policy as an example. How HR Thinks, Makes Decisions, and Answers Questions The question supplied by a reader seemed simple enough. An employee, who travels on company business to trade shows and other client events, wanted to extend his time in the event city by using vacation time. No problem. No problem, that is, until HR informed him of how the days would be charged against his paid vacation time. With sympathy to both HR and the employee, here’s how an HR person has to think and make decisions. The employee traveled on Sunday to a trade show. (No problem with this travel time; the company, by policy, that all employees understand, does not pay weekend travel time for exempt employees.) The employee worked Monday through Wednesday at the trade show and wanted to begin vacation day use following the event. Okay, said the HR manager, Thursday and Friday are vacation days. No, responded the employee, on Thursday, I would normally travel back to the company; since that day would be paid as part of my normal work week, it is not fair to make me take a vacation day to cover Thursday. Are you with me? HR Thinking and Decision-Making Starts to Roll Okay, says the HR manager, whose first inclination is to charge Thursday as a vacation day since the employee is not, in fact, using the day to travel back to the company. The HR person, rightly, does not want to have to make employee time-off decisions on a case-by-case basis, for employees attending company sponsored events. Checking with a couple of CEOs and another HR person, both decisions had supporters. If the employee was expected to return from the conference on Wednesday and work on Thursday, then Thursday should be a vacation day. If Thursday would normally be a travel day, it would count as a work day, not as a vacation day. Under normal circumstances, he would travel back anyway and the company shouldnt penalize him because he extended his stay with a vacation. But, he has chosen not to travel back but instead to go on vacation, said the dissenters. That is not the company’s problem and we only pay for travel time if the employee uses the weekday to travel back. Since we do not pay for any travel time on weekends and there is no such thing as a travel day, employees should only be paid if they are working. Plus, normally an employee, unless he was assigned to booth teardown, would be expected to travel back on Wednesday and report to work on Thursday. He could arrange to arrive late with his manager if his flight was red-eye. In that case, no question, Thursday should be charged as a vacation day. But, what has been past practice in the company? Are employees expected to travel back on Wednesday, if possible, or is Thursday the normal day of travel to return. Most employees want to return to home and work as soon as possible. So, they travel home on Wednesday if any flight is possible, rather than spending a night hanging out by themselves in a strange city with nothing to do. This is also a private versus public employee sector question. If you are a public sector employee, often working under the negotiated conditions of a union contract, you expect such considerations as payment for every minute that you work. If not in direct compensation, a public sector employee expects comp time for hours worked and would expect to be paid for traveling on the weekend, too. This thinking is anathema to a private sector employer who expects exempt employees to get the job done and meet the goals. In fact, thinking like an hourly employee will impede your career and make you less valued as an employee. Here are some earlier thoughts about compensating employees for travel time. If the employee is an hourly or nonexempt employee, employers have to take into account paid travel time, plus hours worked at the trade show. When an employee is eligible for over-time, these regulations apply even on the road. (This is one of the theories about why nonexempt employees are so rarely asked to travel for customer events and training. The government regulations make their attendance cost prohibitiveâ€"or at leastâ€"a pain in the behind to account for and pay by employers. And, as much as these rules may inhibit the utilization of and career growth of hourly employees, HR sympathies are with the employers.) Considerations for the HR Decision about Trade Show Policy The next problem that HR needs to consider, in this case, is that many employees travel frequently for trade show and other company events. A decision made, in this case, has far-reaching ramifications for the employer and decisions about other employee requests in the future. Does HR really want to make these decisions on a case-by-case basis? At what point does work end and vacation begin? When the trade show ends at 4 p.m. on Wednesday? When does the last plane leave for the employee’s home city on Wednesday evening? What if there is no plane on Wednesday? How much documentation and research will HR have to require in the future from other employees to ensure that company time off accounting decisions are consistent and fair? At some point, HR has to determine that a decision in favor of allowing this employee to use Thursday as a vacation day has too many ramifications for similar requests in the future. The employee will feel understandably unhappy. But, no one in HR, whom I know, wants to spend their work time as the HR time charge cop. The employee is choosing not to travel back on paid time; he can travel back if he wants  his pay, and then go on vacation. Any other decision opens up way too big of a can of worms. One final thought for the HR person involves how employees have been treated in the past. Do employees generally travel on Wednesday night or Thursday? If Thursday, are they expected to show up in the office? If Wednesday night, how much of Thursday have they been expected to work? If in the normal course of business, hed come back Wednesday night, then Thursday should count as vacation. If in the normal course of business, he’d travel on Thursday but be expected to also show up in the workplace on Thursday, then Thursday should be charged as a vacation day. Ah, it’s the first time you’ve ever encountered this question? Great. You have the chance to set the precedent and establish your company’s travel policy and practices. You probably even get to add your decision to the employee handbook, so all employees know the lay of the land to guide their decision making in the future. HR Reaches a Solution How about this for a solution to the current question? How has the company handled employee travel to trade shows and customer events in the past? Do employees fly back that night and work the next day or does the company give them leeway and let them fly back the day after the event and report to work the following day? Determine what has governed the management of these practices in the past, according to several of your managers who are responsible for the employees who attend customer-facing events. Past practice will determine the use of a vacation dayâ€"or notâ€"for the absence on Thursday. What if you discoverâ€"as is likelyâ€"that practices have been inconsistent across the board and no clear prior practice exists? Draw the line in the sand. Tell the currently asking employee, who had no rules to guide him, that he can use a vacation day for Thursday. Then: Develop your policy,Add the policy to the employee handbook,Train employees who travel about the revised policy,Let managers know that management discretion will no longer guide employee travel decisions because the decisions have not been consistent and fair, andUse the new policy to make consistent, fair decisions in the future. Travel Policy Language for Future In a company where employees travel frequently for business, and especially if the employee group is large, itd be a nightmare for the company to make decisions on a case-by-case basis and the company could never be fair across the board. Documentation requirements for employees add an unnecessary burden. Nitpicking with good, contributing employees over minute time tracking is insulting and demeaningâ€"for the manager, HR, and the employee. And, it defeats your purpose of trusting employees, treating employees like adults, and expecting employees to make responsible decisions within stated guidelines. So, depending on your company needs here’s the policy recommended as part of your overall travel policy. (You have a whole lot of additional decisions for a comprehensive policy.) And, oh, by the way, if you only have a couple of employees who travel? Ignore all of this HR thinking and decision making. Duh! Managers can make time accounting decisions on a case-by-case basis. Travel to and From Company Sponsored Events: In (company name), employees frequently travel for business. Employees attend training or professional association meetings, visit vendors and competitors, meet with customers, and attend trade shows and other customer interaction events, to name just a few examples. Because these events are often held at desirable locations, employees frequently ask to use their PTO or vacation time to extend their stay at the event location. In these cases, the company is responsible for the cost of employee travel including planes, cabs, airport buses, and necessary conveyances from the day the employee travels to the event until the employee completes company business at the event. The employee must account for each additional weekday taken off from work following the event as paid vacation time, PTO time, or unpaid leave with management permission. All costs incurred by the employee, or travel companions, for travel, food, lodging, transportation, and so forth, while taking time off, must be paid by the employee. The portion of the plane ticket, purchased by the company for the return of the employee after attendance at the event, or accounted for mileage, normally paid for the employee’s return by the company, may be used for the employee’s return home. The company will pay no additional expenses. The employee must account for each day taken off following the company sponsored event. Yes, this a long answer to the employees question about using vacation time to extend his company event travel. But, its a good example of all of the factors that HR must consider in HR thinking and decision making. Its not fun for HR, but its necessary HR thinking and decision making to satisfy the needs of the five company stakeholders. Dont you just hate HR jargon? Begin with the word: incentivize.
